today's state games

September 20, 2008|By Patrick Gutierrez

Morgan State (1-1)

at Winston-Salem State (0-2)

Time: 6 p.m.

Site: Bowman-Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, N.C.

Outlook: The Bears are riding high after their win over North Carolina Central last week. The defense was particularly impressive, forcing seven turnovers and holding the Eagles to seven points. Junior running back Devan James led the offense with 114 rushing yards and is averaging 146 yards. The Rams are still looking for their first win of the season and will rely on freshman running back Nic Cooper, who ran for a career-high 144 yards in their loss to Savannah State last week.

Towson (1-2) at Coastal Carolina (1-2)

Time: 7 p.m.

Site: Brooks Stadium, Conway, S.C.

Outlook: The Tigers are coming off a mistake-filled loss at Richmond, a game in which they turned the ball over five times. The Chanticleers earned their first win of the season last week, defeating Monmouth, 26-7. Towson will look to jump-start its running game, which has been stagnant so far, averaging 39 yards. The Tigers should get a boost from junior running back Matt Castor (Linganore), who returns to the lineup after sitting out last week's contest.

Bowie State (1-1) at Livingstone (0-3)

Time: 7 p.m.

Site: Alumni Memorial Stadium, Salisbury, N.C.

Outlook: The Bulldogs return to action for the first time in two weeks after last week's game against Nicholls State was canceled because of Hurricane Gustav. Before that, they dropped a tough game at Shepherd. The Blue Bears arrive having lost their past two games by a combined 77 points. Bowie State has won the past three meetings between the schools.

SUNY Brockport (1-0)

at Frostburg State (0-1)

Time: 1 p.m.

Site: Bobcat Stadium

Outlook: The Bobcats face a tough Golden Eagles squad that has won the past eight meetings between the teams. Frostburg State will need to improve on defense to entertain any hopes of winning. The unit gave up 560 yards in last week's loss. This week's challenge is stopping SUNY Brockport running back Garrett Lynch, who ran for 190 yards and scored the winning touchdown in last week's overtime win against William Paterson.

Johns Hopkins (2-0) at Gettysburg (0-2)

Time: 1 p.m.

Site: Musselman Stadium, Gettysburg, Pa.

Outlook: The Blue Jays are hoping to go to 3-0 for the fifth time in seven years when they take on the Bullets in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams. Hopkins is coming off a triple-overtime win over Randolph-Macon. This should be a high-scoring affair, as the Blue Jays come in averaging 36.5 points while the Bullets scored 40 points in last week's loss to Hampden-Sydney. Gettysburg won last season's game, 41-10.

McDaniel (1-1) at Catholic (2-0)

Time: 1 p.m.

Site: Defour Field, Washington

Outlook: The Green Terror was terrible last week against Moravian, losing, 42-3, and managing only 113 yards of offense. It will look to rebound this week against the Cardinals, who are trying to improve to 3-0 for the second consecutive season. McDaniel's pass defense, which has allowed only 78.5 yards per game, will be tested by Cardinals quarterback Keith Ricca, who threw for 152 yards and two touchdowns last week and has four touchdown passes this season.

Christopher Newport (0-0)

at Salisbury (2-0)

Time: 1 p.m.

Site: Sea Gull Stadium

Outlook: The Sea Gulls enter this contest ranked No. 8 in the latest D3football.com poll on the strength of their 48-6 thrashing of Geneva last week. The Captains, meanwhile, are making their season debut, as their previously scheduled opener last week against Wesley was canceled because of Tropical Storm Hanna. Salisbury is averaging 39 points and relies almost exclusively on its running attack, which has a gaudy 7.3-yards-per-carry average.
