Frederick H. Heiderman Sr., city police officer

Frederick H. Heiderman Sr., a retired Baltimore police officer and longtime resident of Phoenix, Baltimore County, died of a heart attack Sunday at his Timonium home. He was 85.

Mr. Heiderman was born in Baltimore and raised in Hamilton. He was a 1941 graduate of City College and attended Essex Community College.

During World War II, he enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served with the infantry in Europe. He was discharged with the rank of private in 1945. His decorations included the Purple Heart.

Mr. Heiderman was appointed to the city Police Department in 1948. At the time of his retirement in 1975, he was a lieutenant in the central records division.

In his retirement, he assisted his eldest son in establishing a medical waste disposal business, and another son, a restaurateur, who opened the Hobbit Restaurant in Ocean City.

Mr. Heiderman was an avid golfer, traveler and bridge player.

A resident of Timonium since 2006, Mr. Heiderman was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Hydes.

Services were held Wednesday.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years, the former Dorothy H. Wirth; two sons, Frederick H. Heiderman Jr. of Phoenix, Baltimore County, and Thomas G. Heiderman of Ocean City; a daughter, Donna M. Barlow of Bel Air; and seven grandchildren.
