'The Matchmaker':

Hello Dolly! this is not. Thornton Wilder's classic play, which was the basis for the 1964 musical, has tons of wit and charm. But it makes pointed observations that were given short shrift in the musical. The show runs through Oct. 12 at Center Stage, 700 N. Calvert St.. Showtimes vary. Tickets cost $10-$60. Call 410-332-0033 or go to centerstage.org.

'The Duchess':

This week's Cinema Sundays at the Charles entry, The Duchess, is intriguing. Judging from the trailer, it's either a bodice-buster about the loves of Georgiana Spence (Keira Knightley) or a smart period drama about her rise to power in the 18th century. 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Individual tickets are $15 and can be applied to series memberships. Call 410-727-3456 or go to thecharles.com.

Emmy Awards:

Reality TV stars host the 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards. But who cares about the hosts? There is a good story for local fans to follow. Baltimore native Robin Veith is a nominee as co-writer with creator Matt Weiner of last season's finale of AMC's Mad Men. It's her first screenwriting credit. The telecast airs at 8 p.m. Sunday on ABC.
