Man pleads guilty to fatally beating woman

A Baltimore man who fatally beat his girlfriend in their Mount Vernon apartment pleaded guilty yesterday to second-degree murder, moments before opening statements were to begin in his trial. Baltimore Circuit Judge Paul A. Smith sentenced Rodney Fray, 39, to 15 years in prison and five years of probation. If Fray violates probation, he could receive up to 30 years in prison. Fray attacked Ashley Marie Bellosi, 23, in their apartment in the 800 block of St. Paul St. early on 7, 2007. As Bellosi lay unconscious on the bedroom floor, Fray called a friend for help. The friend called 911, but Fray fled the apartment before paramedics arrived, prosecutor Joshua Felsen said yesterday. Bellosi died four days later at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

City billboards to post crime, traffic messages

Three billboards in the Baltimore area will display public safety alerts and messages - including traffic and weather warnings as well as details about fugitives - from the local FBI office and the city, state and Baltimore County police departments. The initiative, launched in the region Sunday, is part of an agreement announced in December between Phoenix, Ariz.-based billboard advertiser Clear Channel Outdoor and the FBI. CCO has pledged to donate space to local law enforcement on 150 of its digital billboards across the country. Baltimore's boards are located on Russell Street near M&T Bank Stadium; on Interstate 95 near Caton Avenue (Exit 50); and on I-895 near the Harbor Tunnel.
