Candles lit during a power outage sparked a fire that destroyed a Pasadena home Thursday night, Anne Arundel County fire officials said.
With Tropical Storm Hanna heading toward the area today, Fire Chief David L. Stokes is warning residents about the danger of using candles for lighting. If candles are used, they should not be left unattended, said Battalion Chief Matthew Tobia. The fire, which caused $90,000 damage to the bungalow in the 600 block of Tebbston Road, happened about 9:45 p.m. Thursday, Tobia said. The occupants had lit candles during a power outage, then went outside where it was cooler, thinking the candles were extinguished, he said. When firefighters arrived, the house was engulfed in flames, and crews had to protect two other homes that were threatened by the fire. All five occupants - a man, woman, two teenagers and an infant - were safely outside when firefighters arrived, Tobia said. An adult male neighbor who tried unsuccessfully to rescue the family's pet ferret suffered smoke inhalation and was evaluated at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. No other injuries were reported.

One dead, one injured in parkway collision

An accident involving a car and a motorcycle on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway left one person dead and forced authorities to close the roadway for hours early yesterday. The crash occurred about 12:10 a.m. just north of the Route 100 ramp. Police said a 1999 Honda Prelude driven by Casey Scott Shibata was traveling south on the parkway when the car drifted off the left side of the roadway. After an investigation, police concluded that the driver of the Honda over-corrected, and the car began to spin clockwise. The Honda entered the slow lane, where it collided with a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle driven by Arthur Lynwood Tyree, police said. Shibata, 34, of Waldorf, was taken by ambulance to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where he was treated and released. Tyree, 41, of Windsor Mill was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he later died.
