Later that day, the governor flew from Texas to Alaska and delivered the child at a hospital in Palmer, about 10 miles from her home town of Wasilla.

The baby, named Trig, was born with Down syndrome, and the family said at the time they had been aware, through early testing, that he "would face special challenges." The governor was back at work Monday, April 21, when she showed the 6 pound 2 ounce baby, born one month prematurely, to photographers.

Palin's family life has been at the center of a controversy in Alaska over the governor's dismissal of the state's public safety commissioner. The state legislature has appointed a special prosecutor to determine whether the firing was the result of Palin's unhappiness over the commissioner's refusal to remove the governor's former brother-in-law from the state police force.
