Nicaragua folklore dancing scheduled for Sept. 15

Compas de Nicaragua, a nonprofit organization supporting health and education projects in Nicaragua, will present a Nicaragua folklore dance performance at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Meeting House, 5885 Robert Oliver Place, in Oakland Mills Village Center.

The multimedia performance includes dances in costume, performed to marimba music. Members of the five-member ensemble are also members of Mujeres en Accion (Women in action), a women's group that lives and works on community projects in a poor settlement in Managua, Nicaragua.

A video about the women's work, storytelling and a gourd art exhibit are also planned.

Co-sponsors are Columbia United Christian Church and Howard County Friends of Latin America.

Admission is free; donations are welcome.

Civil Law Self-Help Center

In a partnership with the Howard County Circuit Court, the Howard County Library will open a Civil Law Self-Help Center at its east Columbia branch, where attorneys will provide free legal help to members of the community who are representing themselves in litigation or have limited means. Appointments are not necessary.

The Civil Law Self-Help Center will be open at the east Columbia branch from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 11 and 24 (410-313-6600). It will also be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays on the lower level of the Law Library at the Circuit Court, 8360 Court Ave., Ellicott City (410-313-2135).

Help needed : A-OK (Assist Our Kids) Mentoring/Tutoring Program is recruiting volunteers to work with Howard County elementary and middle schools. Volunteers are needed during school hours and after school until 6 p.m. Volunteers should be interested in children and should be able to dedicate an hour per week for a school year. Volunteers are needed to help at Phelps Luck Elementary, Oakland Mills Middle and Longfellow Elementary schools. Vendors sought : Oakland Mills Community Association is seeking vendors for its Cultural Arts Festival, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 4 at Oakland Mills Village Center.
