Medical apparel sale set at Howard Co. General

The Howard County General Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary will sponsor a medical apparel sale from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 17 and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 18 in the hospital's cafeteria, 5755 Cedar Lane, Columbia.

A variety of medical uniforms and shoes will be for sale. Proceeds will benefit the hospital's expansion program.

Laughter's healing power

The Howard County Central Library, 10375 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, will offer a workshop on "The Healing Power of Laughter" at 7 p.m. Sept. 10.

Heather Wandell, chief executive officer of Another Way to See It, will teach laughter exercises that can lower blood pressure, promote emotional well-being and strengthen the immune system.

Help with chronic illness

"Living Well: Take Charge of Your Health," a six-week program for those living with a chronic condition such as arthritis, diabetes or lung disease, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, Columbia.

The seminar, modeled on Stanford University's Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshop and sponsored by the Howard County Office on Aging, covers nutrition, exercise, relaxation and communication skills to manage symptoms, reducing frustration, fighting fatigue and easing daily tasks.

Medicare classes : Howard County Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging will present "Medicare 101: What You Can Expect from Medicare - The Basics," a class on how Medicare works, how to enroll, what the benefits are and how the program relates to supplemental health insurance, at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kiwanis Wallas Recreation Center, 10481 Frederick Road, Ellicott City. Information will be presented on Medicare prescription drug coverage. The program will be repeated at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia. Admission is free.

* "Medicare 102: Why Medicare Isn't Enough!" will be offered at 11 a.m. Sept. 17 at Kiwanis Wallas Recreation Center. The workshop will focus on gaps in Medicare coverage and how to cover them. Medigap plans, employer group coverage and Medicare health plan options will be discussed. Discussion will include information on prescription drug resources and Medicare prescription drug coverage. Admission is free. The program will be repeated at 7 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Bain Center.

Blood pressure screenings : Howard County General Hospital staff members will offer free, walk-in blood-pressure screening from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, North Laurel. 410-313-5577.

Stroke support group : Howard County General Hospital has begun a stroke support group, which meets from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of every month on the second floor of the hospital's Ambulatory Care Center. HCGH Wellness Center, 410-740-7601.
