Schools preparing to open this week

Harford County Public Schools open their doors tomorrow for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Classes for pre-kindergarten pupils begin Wednesday.

Some highlights for the first month of the school year:

* Schools and offices will be closed Sept. 1 for Labor Day.

* The Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 22 at school headquarters, A.A. Roberty Building, 102 S. Hickory Ave., Bel Air.

* Classes will recognize Defenders Day on Sept. 12 with appropriate activities.

* Constitution Week on Sept. 17-23 will be recognized with relevant activities.

* Elementary school students will be dismissed 2-1/2 hours early for teachers' planning time Sept. 29.

* Schools will be closed for Rosh Hashana on Sept. 30.

Parents should contact their child's school for any special back-to-school activities and programs.

CCBC, HCC sign deal on transfer opportunities

Harford Community College and the Community College of Baltimore County recently signed an articulation agreement that provides students with a seamless transfer opportunity to earn an Associate of Applied Sciences Degree in Surveying Technology/Land Survey.

Students will complete all general education and specific program requirements at HCC. A total of 30-31 credits are guaranteed to transfer to the Land Surveying degree program at CCBC, where 33 more credits will be taken.

Surveying Technology/Land Surveying is a statewide program, making students enrolling as out-of-county eligible to receive tuition reduction.

The Land Surveying degree program prepares students for positions with surveying firms, government and engineering/construction firms as office technicians performing data reduction, basic design and computer aided drafting.

Breakfast, lunch offered at county public schools

Harford County Public Schools offer breakfast and lunch to students.

Breakfast includes an entree, fruit, and fruit juice or milk. The cost is $1.05 for regular students, and 20 cents for reduced-price meals.

Lunch includes an entree, choice of three fruits or vegetables, and milk. The cost is $1.70 for elementary students, $1.80 for secondary students, and 40 cents for reduced-price students.

Registration under way for HCC's fall courses

Registration for Harford Community College's Fall 2008 credit courses is being held through Saturday in the Student Center at 401 Thomas Run Road, Bel Air.

Walk-in registration is available from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

The college will be closed Sept. 1. Fall classes begin Sept. 2.

Students may also register for courses by mail or fax. Forms and information are included in the schedule of summer/fall 2008 credit classes. Online registration is continuous through Sept. 1 at

Students may call HCC's Academic Advising at 410-836-4301 to make an appointment for a one-stop session or meet with an academic adviser. Students who have never attended HCC, or who attended before spring 2006, should complete an HCC Application for Enrollment prior to registering.

Charter network to hold workshop for parents

The Maryland Charter School Network will hold a webinar workshop for parents and community groups to explain the charter school law and process for creating charter schools.

To connect to the workshop, participants will need an Internet connection that runs either IE 5.5 and above or Firefox 1.4 and above (PCs), or Safari on a Mac, as well as the Adobe Flash Player 9 plug-in.

The workshop will be shown from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sept. 6 or 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 9 for Maryland Central North, which includes Baltimore, and Baltimore, Carroll, Cecil and Harford counties.

Cecil College to offer SAT classes this fall

Cecil College at Elkton will offer Scholastic Aptitude Test preparation classes this fall.

SAT Math Preparation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for five consecutive Wednesdays starting Sept. 10. Basic math skills, algebra, geometry, problem solving, reasoning and test-taking strategies will be covered. Tuition is $70.

SAT Verbal Preparation will be held from 9 a.m. to noon over four Saturdays beginning Sept. 20. Students will learn to sharpen their verbal skills. Tuition is $84.

Literacy department at HCC seeks volunteers

The Literacy Education Department of Harford Community College is seeking volunteers to assist instructors in Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes next spring around the county.

No specialized training is necessary.
