Book club at Elkridge

Play time : A group of parents whose children will enter the Veterans Elementary School kindergarten program are arranging times for their children to play together and make new friends. The school's main playground, to the right of the school on the big blacktop, is available while school is not in session. A play group will be held at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Kiwanis Club : Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City, a volunteer service organization, meets at 6:45 p.m. Mondays at the Kiwanis-Wallas Building, 3300 Norbert's Way, Ellicott City. Everyone is welcome. 410-418-8218, or www.ellicottcitykiwanis.com.

Scrapbooking : The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will offer an "End of Summer Scrapbooking Workshop" for ages 11 to 17 interested in preserving favorite summer photos and memories from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Registration is required. 410-313-1950.

Chess : The Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., sponsors a chess club for ages 13 and older from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Players of all abilities are welcome, but they must know how to play chess. Snacks will be provided. 410-313-5077.

Bag sale : Trinity Church Gift & Thrift Shoppe, 6010 Waterloo Road at Pfeiffer's Corner, behind St. John's Lutheran Church in Elkridge, will continue its bag sale this month. Bags can be filled with items for $4 a bag. Store hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and on the first and third Saturdays of each month. 410-799-9175.

Free bridge : The Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center, 10481 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, sponsors a bridge group from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; pinochle meets from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Those who attend are invited to take a lunch. Coffee, tea and treats will be provided. Donations are accepted for the snack fund. Duplicate bridge is available from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays.

Mah-jongg : Mah-jongg is played at the Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center, 10481 Frederick Road, from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Free.

* A community service group meets to knit and crochet blankets, baby clothes and other items for charities, hospitals and senior centers from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Kiwanis-Wallas center. 410-313-7279.

* A Bunco program for ages 55 and older, sponsored by Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, will be offered from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 25. A $1 donation is requested.

Learning English : The Miller branch library offers an English conversation club from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Wednesdays for people who speak English as a second language and would like to practice conversation in a group setting. First-time participants must register in advance. 410-313-1950.

Legal services : Attorney Thomas A. Burns will be at the Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 27 for the 60 Plus Wills and Legal Screening Program. He will draw up simple wills, powers of attorney, living wills, and help with small estates and deed changes. The program, sponsored by the Howard County Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging, is available on the fourth Wednesday of each month. It is open to Howard County residents, ages 60 and older. The cost is on a sliding scale. An appointment is required, and should be scheduled well in advance. 410-313-1400.
