Fairbanks sizzled on the Fourth of July (85 degrees, same as Baltimore). But it's been downhill since. Anchorage averaged almost 3 degrees below normal for June and July. Fairbanks is down 7 degrees for August. Gary Hufford, regional weather service scientist, blames a new cold cycle in the North Pacific. "We're begging for anything over 60 degrees," he said.
