* Equestrian: The U.S. found itself in seventh place after incurring 100 points in jumping penalties in the cross country portion of team events. Rebecca Holder cost 60 of those points, and Karen O'Conner cost the other 40. Germany leads, followed by Australia and Great Britian.

* Fencing: Emily Cross was the highest-scoring American, finishing 17th. Erinn Smart was 26th, and Hanna Thompson was 27th. Maria Valentina Vezzali won the gold for Italy by beating Nam Hyunhee of South Korea. Margherita Granbassi of Italy won the bronze over teammate Giovanna Lamonova.

* Handball: In the women's matches, France beat Kazakhstan, Norway defeated Angola, South Kortea beat Germany, Romania topped China, Russia beat Sweden, and Brazil and Hungary played to a tie.

* Field hockey:

* Rowing: The U.S. spent most of the day in the play-in portion of the tournament. In the women's double sculls, Megan Kalmore and Ellen Tomek, won one of their heats, as did Michelle Guerette in the women's single sculls. Wes Piermarini and Elliot Hovey finished fourth in the men's double sculls.

* Sailing: After six races in Yngling, the U.S. squad sits in fourth place behind Greta Britain, Netherlands and Australia. In the 49er class after six races, the U.S. team of Tim Wadlow and Chris Rast is in 13th place. The RS:X class for women was rather grim, with Nancy Rios 26 of 27. In the RS:X men's division, Benjamin Barger is 22nd. In the 470-women class after two races, the U.S. team of Amanda Clark and Sara Mergenthaler sat in 13th.

* Shooting: Corey Cogdell won a four-way shootoff to grab the bronze for the U.S. in the trap. Satu Makela-Nummela of Finland won, followed by Zuzana Stefecekova of Slovakia for the silver.

* Tennis: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal won their first-round matches. Federer, of Switzerland, beat Dmitry Tursunov, 6-4, 6-2, and Nadal, of Spain, stopped Potito Starace of Italy, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. The U.S. lost Robby Ginepri and Sam Querrey in singles comprtition, leaving James Blake as the only American to make it to the second round. On the women's side, both the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, won their matches.

* Volleyball: The U.S. women lost three straight sets to the Cuban team. It evened its record to 1-1. In other games, Serbia beat Algeria, 3-0, Italy shut out Kazakhstan, 3-0, and Brazil shut out Russia. The host Chinese team defeated Poland, 3-1, and Japan beat Venezuela, 3-0.

* Water polo: The U.S. women's team just got by China, 12-11. Natalie Golda was the key for the U.S., scoring four goals. In other games, Hungary beat the Netherlands, 11-9, Italy defeated Russia, 9-8, and Australia stopped Greece, 8-6.

* Weightlifting : The U.S. did not qualify anyone for the finals. In the women's 58 kg division, Chen Yanqing of China won the gold, followed by Marina Shainova of Russia and O Jong Ae of North Korea. In the men's 62 kg division, Zhang Xiangxiang of China took gold, Diego Salazar of Columbia the silver and Triyatno of Indonesia the bronze.
