* Men's gymnastics: China won the gold medal it has long craved in men's gymnastics today, while the Americans settled for bronze.
China's score of 286.125 was more than seven points ahead of Japan, the defending Olympic champion. The Americans were in the running for the silver until their final two events, but it was a solid finish for a team that had to replace not one, but two injured Hamm brothers in the 10 days before the games began.
This was the second straight Olympic medal for the Americans, who finished with 275.850 points.
* Archery: South Korea won the men's team event by two points over Italy. China finished third. The U.S., with a team of Brady Ellison, Butch Johnson and Vic Wunderle, was eliminated in the first round by Chinese Taipei.
* Badminton: All of the top eight seeds won except for No. 5 Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark and No. 7 Taufik Hidatyat of India. The No. 1 seed, Lin Dan of China, breezed in his first match, 21-16, 21-13.
* Basketball: The U.S. women's team beat China, 108-63. Tina Thompson led the team with 27 points. The U.S. is the only 2-0 team in Group B. It plays Mali tomorrow. Spain beat New Zealand, 85-62, Czech Republic beat Mali, 81-47, Russia beat South Korea, 77-72, Belarus defeated Latvia, 79-57, and Australia beat Brazil, 80-65.
* Beach volleyball: The U.S. won both matches. The men's duo of Todd Rogers and Philip Dalhausser dispatched Sascha Heyer and Patrick Heuscher of Switzerland, 21-15, 21-10. Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs stayed undefeated by beating Stephanie Pohl and Okka Rau of Germany, 21-11, 21-15.
* Boxing: American Raynell Williams easily beat Alessio di Savino, 9-1, in the flyweight division. But lightweight Sadam Ali wasn't so lucky, losing 20-5 to Popescu Georgian of Romania. Williams will fight Khedafi Djelkhir of France on Friday.
* Canoe/kayak: In the slalom kayak, Scott Parsons was third for the U.S. after the first run but missed a gate on the second run, resulting in a huge penalty, ending up 20th of 21. In the single canoe competition, Ben Fraker finished 10th, also leaving him out of today's medal competition.
* Diving: Lin Yue and Huo Liang won the men's 10-meter synchronized platform diving for China. Patrick Hausding and Sascha Klein of Germany got the silver, and Gleb Galperin and Dmitriy Dobrosok of Russia won the bronze. The U.S. team of David Boudia and Thomas Finchum was fifth.
