Prince Edward Island, Canada, is having a 100th birthday party this year for a freckled redhead with pigtails who first appeared in 1908.

She's Anne of author Lucy Maud Montgomery's beloved novel Anne of Green Gables.

In honor of the book's 100th year, two signature events have been scheduled: the Aug. 17 Matthew & Marilla's Cuthbert Reunion in Summerside and the Nov. 30 celebration of the author's birthday.

In addition, Lucy Maud Montgomery Festival Days, every weekday during August, will be observed at assorted venues with connections to the author and her book. Activities will range from old-fashioned kitchen parties and storytelling sessions to tours, lectures and scrapbooking events.

Highlights include visits to L.M. Montgomery's birthplace in New London, talks by historians and storytellers who will share their passion for the author's works, an interactive adventure in Avonlea Village, tours of the fields and gardens where Montgomery wrote Anne of Green Gables and a chat with the author's great-grandson John MacNeil and his wife, Jennie.
