A new partnership between Phelps Luck Elementary School and Our Shepherd Lutheran Church will provide mentoring and other support to children, families and school staff.
Under the terms of the agreement, church members will provide at least 10 hours of volunteer time each week to mentor students. They will also help at school events.
The church has also pledged to help with food, clothing and school supply drives, holiday assistance and a transportation fund. The church also plans to offer space for school meetings and provide refreshments for staff appreciation events.
Seeking mentors, tutors for elementary, middle schools
A-OK (Assist Our Kids) Mentoring/Tutoring Program is recruiting volunteers to work with Howard County elementary and middle schools.
Volunteers are needed during school hours and after school until 6 p.m. Volunteers should be interested in children and should be able to dedicate an hour per week for a school year.
Volunteers are needed to help at Phelps Luck Elementary, Oakland Mills Middle schools and Longfellow Elementary School.

Vendors sought : Applications are being accepted for vendors for a Save the Earth event at Lake Elkhorn Park from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 27. Classes, therapies : The East Columbia 50+ Center is offering appointments for reflexology - deep foot massage - from 5:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Mondays. The cost is $45 for an hour treatment. Appointments available between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Fridays.
*"Harmonize Exercise Class" meets 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. O.H. Laster, a personal fitness trainer, teaches "Stamina, Strength, Stretch and Synergy." The cost is $21 a month; no drop-ins.
*Advanced bridge is offered from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, and pinochle and bridge are offered at noon Fridays. Free. Drop-in players are welcome.
*Free Nutritional Counseling with Rona Martiyan, nutritionist for the Howard County Office on Aging, will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 17. Appointments are required.

PFLAG : The Columbia/Howard County Chapter of PFLAG - Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays - will hold a question-and-discussion session on matters concerning the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Owen Brown Interfaith Center, 7246 Cradlerock Way. Those who attend will be asked to write questions on slips of paper and place them in a basket. They will be read aloud by a moderator. The discussion is open to the public.
