Lawyer offers help with wills, small estates, deed changes

Attorney Thomas A. Burns will be at Ellicott City Senior Center, 9401 Frederick Road, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 27 for the 60 Plus Wills and Legal Screening Program.

Burns will draw up powers of attorney, living wills and help with small estates and deed changes.

The program, sponsored by the Howard County Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging, is available on the fourth Wednesday of each month. It is open to Howard County residents, ages 60 and older. The cost is on a sliding scale.

Ellicott City railroad crossing closing for maintenance

CSX Railroad will begin maintenance on the crossing at Old Frederick and Hollifield roads in Ellicott City this week. The project was originally scheduled to begin Aug. 4.

The crossing will be closed to traffic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Traffic will be detoured via Old Frederick Road, Rogers Avenue, U.S. 40, Rolling Road, Fairbrook Road, Johnnycake Road and Hollifield Road.

The work is expected to be completed by late afternoon Wednesday.

Summer reading : The B&O Railroad Museum is holding a summer reading program at its Ellicott City and Baltimore locations. "I've Been Reading on the Railroad" invites elementary school-age children to pick up a reading journal from the museum's store, the Whistle Stop Shop, read eight books and record them in the journal. Children who return the journal on or before Sept. 2 will receive a free book and will be entered to win an engineer's outfit. The museum has a list of suggested books, which focus on life on the railroad, available at the museum store. Cheerleading, football : Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting registration for Elkridge Hurricanes Flag and Tackle football and cheerleading. Practice begins this month at Elkridge Landing Middle School. The season runs through mid-November. Flag football for ages 5 and 6 costs $85; tackle football for ages 7 to 14 costs $160. Cheerleading for ages 5 to 14 costs $125. Tackle football participants are placed on teams based on age and weight. Early registration is advised. Play time : A group of parents whose children will enter the Veterans Elementary School kindergarten program are arranging times for their children to play together. The school's main playground, to the right of the school on the big blacktop, is available while school is not in session. A play group will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 18.

Scrapbooking : The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will offer an "End of Summer Scrapbooking Workshop" for ages 11 to 17 interested in preserving favorite summer photos and memories from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 19. Registration is required. 410-313-1950.
