A teenager was fatally shot early yesterday during an apparent robbery at an apartment in North Baltimore, city police said.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m., a 20-year-old man let three men into an apartment in the 500 block of Castle Drive, where he was staying with a 9-year-old child, police said.

One of the men produced a handgun, and all three began ransacking the apartment. Police said two other people, including Matthew Scarborough, 16, arrived at the apartment, about a block east of York Road, near the county line.

The gunman ordered the occupants to get on the floor, according to police. Scarborough, who lived in the apartment, did not comply, and the man with the gun shot him in his left shoulder, police said. The gunman and his accomplices fled after the shooting.

Scarborough was taken to Sinai Hospital, where he died about 2 a.m., a police spokesman said.

Police did not release additional information.
