The hotel, with about 30 percent of its rooms offering views into the ballpark, is connected to the Baltimore Convention Center with an enclosed pedestrian bridge over Howard Street. It includes a lobby bar with seating for 90, a fitness center, a sports-theme restaurant, a grand ballroom and a junior ballroom.

"We wanted a quiet presence of a building, not flashy, that would wear well over time," Brodie said.

Designers from Daroff Design Inc. said they drew on the brick of nearby buildings and the harbor water to come up with a color scheme of rust and jewel-toned blues and greens. "The goal was to have this hotel feel uniquely Baltimore," said Karen Daroff, president of Daroff Design.

Part of that concept entailed including work by local artists, including paintings, glass and mosaic pieces and photos.

One of the artists, Greg Fletcher, saw his landscape paintings on the walls of the hotel yesterday.

"I love the light" inside the hotel, he said. "You are inside looking out. You can even watch the ball game."
