Mariners update

A season that started with high expectations gets worse by the day for Seattle, which even with last night's win over Texas is 4-9 since the All-Star break and a loser of 15 of its past 21 games. The Mariners' 41 wins are an American League low and better than only the Washington Nationals in the majors. Seattle is 1-6 against the Orioles this season after going 13-6 against them the previous two seasons. One bright spot has been second baseman Jose Lopez, who extended his hitting streak to 18 games last night. All-Star outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, who is a career .374 hitter against the Orioles, has had multi-hit games in four of his past five starts, including last night. After converting 40 of his 42 save opportunities last season, closer J.J. Putz has blown five saves in 12 chances while struggling with injuries.
