QUARTERBACK DERBY

Kyle Boller missed part of yesterday morning's practice with what appeared to be a right foot injury, but it didn't seem to bother him in the afternoon session, as he ran the offense with few hiccups. Troy Smith and Joe Flacco made strong throws to receivers along the sidelines, and Smith's ability to scamper out of the pocket aided a patchwork offensive line. Flacco was the only quarterback to throw for a touchdown during a red-zone drill in the morning.

PLAY OF THE DAY

Flacco's strike to rookie wide receiver Marcus Smith was a beauty. With Smith nestled in the left corner of the end zone, Flacco slung the ball to Smith before safety Jim Leonhard could get there.

HIT OF THE DAY

During full-team drills, rookie running back Ray Rice jammed and stood up rookie linebacker Tavares Gooden. At 5 feet 8, 205 pounds, Rice gives up 5 inches and 30 pounds to Gooden.

INJURIES

Among those absent were defensive tackles Kelly Gregg (left knee), Haloti Ngata (sprained right knee) and J'Vonne Parker, offensive tackles Adam Terry (sprained left ankle) and Jared Gaither (right ankle), linebackers Gary Stills and Dan Cody (right foot), running back P.J. Daniels (cramps), fullback Justin Green, tight end Aaron Walker (leg) and kicker Matt Stover. Watching from the sidelines were safety Ed Reed (shoulder), tight end Daniel Wilcox (toe), defensive tackle Justin Bannan, running backs Cory Ross and Allen Patrick (mild concussion), cornerback David Pittman (sore foot), offensive tackle Joe Reitz (shoulder) and wide receiver Patrick Carter (dislocated left shoulder). Cornerback Chris McAlister and rookie offensive tackle Oniel Cousins did not practice in the afternoon.

HARBAUGH Says

Yesterday's morning session was actually pleasant with the sun hiding behind a series of clouds that kept the humid and oppressive conditions at bay. Coach John Harbaugh said he expected the mild weather. "We told the guys today that the cloud cover was on the schedule," he said.

Training camp today

The morning practice begins at 8:45 a.m. and is scheduled to run between two and 21/2 hours. The afternoon special teams session starts at 2 p.m. and will likely run for about an hour.
