CRIME WATCH

A Severn mother hid in a bedroom closet while police broke up a large underage drinking party at her home, Anne Arundel County police said yesterday.

Melonie Joy Coats, 42, of 323 Constant Ave., and her son, 18-year-old Andrew Lee Coats, were charged with operating a disorderly house about midnight Sunday.

Officers responding to a complaint about a party found several teenagers in the front yard holding alcoholic beverages; they fled when they saw police. Once police entered the house, the scene became chaotic as more partygoers ran out the back door.

The young host and his mother were the only people taken into custody.

"A lot of these parties go on without the knowledge of the homeowner," said Sgt. John Gilmer, a police spokesman. However, this mother was "apparently engaged with the individuals at this party."
