QUARTERBACK DERBY

All three quarterbacks threw interceptions yesterday, but rookie Joe Flacco struggled the most. He threw four interceptions in the morning and afternoon sessions, and two (by cornerbacks Fabian Washington and Ronnie Prude) would have been returned for touchdowns. Troy Smith had a pass to rookie Justin Harper on a slant pattern picked off and taken to the end zone by cornerback Chris McAlister, and Smith also botched a snap from center. Kyle Boller was slightly more consistent, finding receivers underneath for modest gains. His only miscue occurred when rookie safety Haruki Nakamura leaped over Mark Clayton to make an eye-opening interception.

WORKOUT OF THE DAY

The morning session was punctuated with whistles and yellow flags. The officials flagged the defense six times for offside and Prude once for pass interference, and the offense committed at least three false starts.

HIT OF THE DAY

Split the award between defensive tackle Dwan Edwards and linebacker Bart Scott. On back-to-back running plays, gaps opened by the offensive line were quickly filled by Edwards and Scott, who punished the running backs with hard tackles. The plays drew hoots and hollers from their defensive teammates.

INJURIES

Starting defensive tackle Haloti Ngata went down in the morning and appeared to walk off under his own power, but he needed a cart to take him off the field and back to the locker room. Linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo left practice early and returned to the sideline with his right knee wrapped in ice. Neither player participated in the afternoon session. Cornerback Anwar Phillips, linebacker Robert McCune and defensive tackle J'Vonne Parker also were missing from the second practice.

HARBAUGH SAYS

A special teams coordinator for nine seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, coach John Harbaugh now has to monitor everything and has been spotted roaming every part of the field. Harbaugh said he relies on his coaching staff to update him on what he should watch for. "They always give me a list of things they think are issues, so I'll pick out three or four things that I might want to talk to guys about or look at," he said. "Then there are the things I see. In coaching, I think you coach as you see it, coach it as you find it."

BEST QUOTE

"BART, LET'S SEE HOW FAR YOU CAN THROW."

Outside linebackers coach Mike Pettine, who was holding an official's flag prior to the start of yesterday's morning session, to Scott. Scott hurled a flag into the stands near the end of the Ravens' 27-24 loss to the New England Patriots on Dec. 3.
