Detour for rail work

CSX Railroad will begin maintenance of the railroad crossing at Woodstock and Old Court roads in Woodstock. The project, which starts this week, is expected to be completed by Friday, weather permitting.

While the road crossing is closed, traffic will be detoured along Old Frederick Road, Marriottsville Road, Granite Road and Old Court Road.

Message boards and signs will be posted to alert motorists. Signs will also be posted if the project is delayed. A recorded message at 410-313-4604 has details and updates.

Blood pressure screening offered

The Glenwood branch library, 2350 Route 97, Cooksville, will offer a free, walk-in blood pressure screening, conducted by Howard County General Hospital staff, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 4 and 18.

Pick your own : Larriland Farm in Woodbine, owned and operated by the Moore family since 1973, is offering opportunities to pick blueberries, tart and sweet cherries, red raspberries and beets through much of the summer. Teen space : The Glenwood Community Center's game room for teens is open 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The room, designed by teens, includes a pool table, table tennis, bumper pool and a video game area with a big-screen TV. After-school activities and programs are planned. Preschool classes : The Glenwood library, 2350 Route 97, Cooksville, offers preschool classes to teach social skills, comprehension and the foundations of reading. An adult must accompany kids younger than 3.

*"Play Partners," for infants and toddlers to 23 months with an adult, is offered at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesdays. Registration is not required.

*"Picture Bug Parade," a 30-minute summer program of music and stories for ages 2 to 5, is offered at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Thursdays. (The program will revert to its original title, "Picture Book Parade," in the fall.) Registration is not required.

*"Potty Time," a program of stories for children ages 18 months to 3 years old with an adult, will offer tips for parents. The program will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 20. Registration begins Aug. 13.

Geckos play : The Geckos, a five-piece "Island rock" band with electric guitar, steel pans, electric bass and drums and, occasionally, a trumpet, will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at Schooley Mill Park, 112975 Hall Shop Road, in Highland. The free concert is part of Howard County Recreation and Parks' "Travelin' Bands" summer concert series. Bring a blanket or lawn chair.
