QUARTERBACK DERBY

Chalk it up to first-practice jitters or whatever, but Troy Smith looked vastly improved from Tuesday's performance, completing all four of his passes in red-zone drills. Kyle Boller went 4-for-5 but has a tendency to throw behind his receivers. Joe Flacco puts some zip on his passes, hitting his receivers in stride in the hands. But when the pocket is breaking down and there are no options, Flacco has to learn to throw the ball away.

PLAY OF THE DAY

The coaching staff nearly collected its second interception in as many days when a pass by Flacco sailed over wide receiver Marcus Smith to defensive backs coach Mark Carrier. But much to the chagrin of Carrier and the other defensive coaches, Carrier couldn't hold on to the ball.

HIT OF THE DAY

Rookie offensive tackle Oniel Cousins has developed a mean streak, but at least he can say he wasn't involved in a minor skirmish during the afternoon practice. That honor belonged to offensive tackle Sean Dumford and defensive lineman Lorenzo Williams. But after a brief tumble, order was restored.

INJURIES

None to report.

HARBAUGH SAYS

Because of the lack of cornerbacks in camp, Carrier and coach John Harbaugh lined up as defensive backs during the red-zone drills. Asked whether he was having fun, Harbaugh replied: "Did you see me go down out there? No flags though, so no penalty. What's that machine called when you fall and you can't get back up right away? Lifeline? Well, I needed one of those today."

BEST QUOTE

"I GOT EIGHT GOOD ONES ON IT."

Carrier, referring to getting eight of his 10 fingers on the football during his near interception.

TRAINING CAMP TODAY

No practices today. Tomorrow: 8:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.
