Metaphor

The lowdown: The jazz quartet Metaphor released its debut album, Temporary Suspension, which features a mixture of contemporary jazz and chamber music, as well as African, Afro-Cuban, rock and hip-hop, this month. The group gives two performances tomorrow at An die Musik.

Art exhibit

The lowdown: The Caryn Martin: Atmospheric Abstractions exhibit runs at the Creative Alliance Wednesday through Aug. 16. Martin's works consist of several quasi-monochrome and almost abstract landscapes. The pieces remind one of reverse photo negatives because they contain large portions of white areas.

Youth Concert

The lowdown: After toiling away at the University of Maryland School of Music during a weeklong camp, rising sixth-, seventh-, eighth- and ninth-graders show the public the fruits of their labors at the UM School of Music: Summer Youth Music Camp Concert at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. The intensive camp aims to hone the skills of young musicians and increase their knowledge of musicianship.
