Man collapses, during race, dies

A man died after collapsing during a 5-mile race in Rockville over the weekend, according to officials in Montgomery County.

Pete Piringer of the Montgomery County fire and rescue service says the man collapsed near the campus of Montgomery College, about a mile from the finish line of the Rockville Rotary Twilight Runfest, on Saturday night. The runner was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Piringer says more than 2,000 people took part in the race. He says about a half-dozen other participants received treatment at an area hospital for heat-related problems.

Race officials delayed the start time because of the weather, and advised runners to take precaution amid the humidity and temperatures that topped 90 degrees.

Ondora was driving a Toyota Camry east on Cayots Corner Road, west of Old Telegraph Road, in Chesapeake City about 4:30 p.m. when it veered off the roadway and struck a tree, Fisher said.
