Library offers art program

The Elkridge branch library, 6540 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, will offer a middle school art club from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 5. Participants can learn new techniques, get ideas, share art work and work on projects. Materials will be provided. Registration begins Tuesday.

An "End of Summer Scrapbooking Workshop" for ages 11-17 interested in preserving favorite summer photos and memories will be offered from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City. Registration begins Aug. 5.

Summer reading : The B&O Railroad Museum is holding a summer reading program at its Ellicott City and Baltimore locations. The program, "I've Been Reading on the Railroad," invites elementary school-age children to pick up a reading journal from the museum's store, The Whistle Stop Shop, read eight books and record them in the journal. Children who return the journal on or before Sept. 2 will receive a free book and will be entered to win an engineer's outfit. The museum has a list of suggested books for the program; the books, which focus on life on the railroad, are available at the museum store. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of American railroading and its impact on American society, culture and economy. 410-752-2462, Ext. 214.

Chess : The Elkridge branch library, 6540 Washington Blvd., sponsors a chess club for ages 13 and older from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Players of all abilities are welcome, but they must know how to play chess. Snacks will be provided. 410-313-5077.

*The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will hold a meeting of its Teen Chess Club for youth ages 9-17 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 29. Registration is not needed. 410-313-1950.

Cheerleading, Football : Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting registration for Elkridge Hurricanes Flag and Tackle football and cheerleading. Practice begins in August at Elkridge Landing Middle School. The season runs through mid-November. Flag football for ages 5 and 6 costs $85; tackle football for ages 7 to 14 costs $160. Cheerleading for ages 5 to 14 costs $125. Tackle football participants are placed on teams based on age and weight. Early registration is advised. Bag sale : Trinity Church Gift & Thrift Shoppe, 6010 Waterloo Road, at Pfeiffer's Corner, behind St. John's Lutheran Church in Elkridge, will hold a bag sale this month and next. Free bridge : The Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center, 10481 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, sponsors a bridge group from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; pinochle meets from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Those who attend are invited to take a lunch. Coffee, tea and treats will be provided. Donations are accepted for the snack fund. Duplicate bridge is available from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays.

* Mah-jongg is played at the center from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Admission is free.

* A community service group meets to knit and crochet blankets, baby clothes and other items for charities, hospitals and senior centers from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Kiwanis-Wallas center.
