County to offer CPR classes Aug. 2

The Howard County Office of Children's Services will offer an Infant/Child and Adult CPR Certification workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 2 at the agency's offices, 3300 N. Ridge Road, Suite 380, Ellicott City.

The class is acceptable for certification for a child-care license; certification (by the American Heart Association) is good for two years. Participants will receive a certification card on the day of the class. The cost is $45.

First Aid certification will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 2 at the same location. The cost is $50. Those who take both classes receive a $10 discount.

"Take It Outside!" -- a workshop on outdoor activities for preschool children, will be offered from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 6.

The cost is $20.

HCC to introduce culinary program

Howard Community College will hold a free, no-obligation Hospitality & Culinary Management Open House, to introduce the college's new hospitality and culinary management degree and certificate programs, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Room 401 of the Rouse Company Foundation Student Services Building, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

The event will include culinary demonstrations, audience participation and information from local industry professionals. A free light lunch will be served.

Orientation sessions offered at HCC

Howard Community College will hold new-student orientation sessions from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 18 and from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the college's Athletics Center, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

First-time students are encouraged to attend.

Parents are also invited to attend a parents program during both orientation sessions.

Both sessions include refreshments, information packets and activities, including interactive workshops, campus tours and prizes. Appetizers will be offered at 5:15 p.m. before the evening session; dessert will be served after the session. A continental breakfast will be served, starting at 8:15 a.m., before the Aug. 20 session. After the session, students can stay to participate in HCC ThinkFast, an interactive game show that offers a chance to win as much as $200.

Volunteers needed for committee

The Howard County school system is seeking applications for membership on its Instructional Materials/Criteria Review Committee.

Members must be residents of Howard County.

Five new members are needed for two-year terms. Two student members are also needed for a two-year term.

The committee will be responsible for reviewing selection criteria for instructional materials and revising criteria, when necessary. The committee will also serve as a review committee for materials that are to be re-evaluated. New members will be appointed in September, and begin serving in October.

CARE center offers resources, referrals

The CARE Center for Child and Adolescent Resources will help families discuss their needs and offer resources and referrals.

Information is available on community services, county recreation and sports facilities, financial assistance, support groups, emergency needs, help for drug or alcohol abuse, classes for parents, school readiness and achievement, emotional and mental health, child care resources and other topics.
