Chamber launches new Web site

The Howard County Chamber of Commerce has launched a new Web site that offers easier access to the member directory, calendar of events and committee pages, where visitors can gain access to chamber policies.

The new members-only section offers secure account access and event registration. New sections for the Young Professionals Network, a chamber initiative, and the Awards for Chamber Excellence Hall of Fame are included. New members now appear on the home page, and a link offers access to the "Chamber Weekly" e-mail newsletter and banner ads for small- business owners.

The new site (www.howard is expected to increase the number of visits to the member directory, which was searched more than 1.7 million times last year, according to a chamber news release.

The chamber represents more than 800 member businesses.

Buy Local Challenge starts Saturday

The Howard County Economic Development Authority's Agricultural Marketing Program is joining other Maryland counties in the Buy Local Challenge from Saturday through July 27.

The campaign is designed to raise awareness in the community of residents can help invigorate the rural economy. Howard County residents are encouraged to buy from local farms, farm stands, farmers' markets, wineries, grocery stores and markets that offer local products, or dine at restaurants that serve locally grown food and wine.

The program emphasizes the taste, health benefits and economic and environmental advantages of purchasing fresh, local, seasonal produce. Consumers are urged to pledge to buy and eat local during Buy Local Week.
