Baseball camp to start July 28

The Centennial High School Boosters will sponsor Eagle Baseball School for boys ages 7-14. The camp, led by Centennial baseball coach Denis Ahearn, offers drills in throwing, hitting, fielding base-running, pitching, catching and strategy.

Players' skills will be individually analyzed and improved. Top players and coaches in the area will demonstrate their skills, and the emphasis will be on fundamentals, sportsmanship and fun.

The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 28 through Aug. 1 at Centennial High School. Tuition is $165 with a $15 discount if three or more campers register at the same time.

Summer reading : The B&O Railroad Museum is holding a summer reading program at its Ellicott City and Baltimore locations. The program, "I've Been Reading on the Railroad," invites elementary school-age children to pick up a reading journal from the museum's store, The Whistle Stop Shop, read eight books and record them in the journal. Children who return the journal on or before Sept. 2 will receive a free book and will be entered to win an engineer's outfit. The museum has a list of suggested books for the program; the books, which focus on life on the railroad, are available at the museum store. Chess : The Elkridge branch library, 6540 Washington Blvd., sponsors a chess club for ages 13 and older from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Players of all abilities are welcome, but they must know how to play chess. Snacks will be provided. 410-313-5077.

Cheerleading, Football : Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting registration for Elkridge Hurricanes Flag and Tackle football and cheerleading. Practice begins in August at Elkridge Landing Middle School. The season runs through mid-November. Flag football for ages 5 and 6 costs $85; tackle football for ages 7 to 14 costs $160. Cheerleading for ages 5 to 14 costs $125. Tackle football participants are placed on teams based on age and weight. Early registration is advised. Bag sale : Trinity Church Gift & Thrift Shoppe, 6010 Waterloo Road, at Pfeiffer's Corner, behind St. John's Lutheran Church in Elkridge, will hold a bag sale this month and next. Free bridge : The Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center, 10481 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, sponsors a bridge group from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; pinochle meets from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays. Those who attend are invited to take a lunch. Coffee, tea and treats will be provided. Donations are accepted for the snack fund.
