Towson dream house had starring TV role

Desirable Spaces

July 13, 2008|By Andrea F. Siegel | Andrea F. Siegel,Sun reporter

When Marian Matthis first saw the center-hall colonial brick house in West Towson some four years ago, she was seduced by its charm, large rooms and yard.

"This was my dream home," she said.

It had decorative moldings, enough space for four children, an eat-in kitchen, balconies, shady gardens and sunny gardens.

"I get more use out of the patio and porch and the pond area," she said. The patio on the side is an airy outdoor getaway, the rear screened porch extends from the kitchen, and the pond area is secluded.

Bob and Marian Matthis' house search and decision to buy this house when they relocated from Nashville was the stuff of television, literally. In May, HGTV most recently reran the House Hunters episode that featured their search.

FOR THE RECORD - An article in Sunday's Real Estate section incorrectly identified Realtor Ashley B. Richardson's employer. Richardson works for Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage.
The Sun regrets the errors.

With Marian Matthis' two children at home and Bob Matthis' at college, they're hoping to downsize while saving for the younger ones' college tuition.

About the house Built in 1896, the house retains such original details as banded oak floors and high ceilings, but has contemporary conveniences, such as recessed lighting and ceiling fans.

French doors in the sunroom and large living room allow for cross-ventilation. The house has five bedrooms, three full bathrooms, one half-bath and ample closet and storage space. The master suite, which is among three second-floor bedrooms, features a newly redone bathroom with two sinks - it's among the baths the couple modernized - and a balcony.

The third floor has two bedrooms, each of which has two large closets. The basement is finished, and includes a workshop and family room. There's a two-car garage.

Address 702 W. Joppa Road, Towson 21204

Asking price $739,000

Taxes $7,301

Size The house is a little over 3,000 square feet, on 0.6 acre.

Features The kitchen has upgraded appliances, and its cabinets, with two appliance garages and lazy susan, have a pearl finish. The kitchen includes a Corian-topped peninsula and a desk that can do double-duty as a beverage area for parties.

The Matthis family added central air conditioning on the main floor; the upper floors already had it.

The kitchen overlooks the terraced backyard. The hot-water radiator heat is fueled by natural gas.
