A 19-year-old Severn man surrendered to authorities yesterday and was charged with possession and distribution of child pornography, state police said.

Paul Joseph Janne III of the 800 block of Meadow Road faces four counts of distributing child pornography and eight counts of possessing child pornography, police said.

State police began investigating in June 2007 when troopers assigned to the Maryland Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force found a computer on a peer-to-peer, file-sharing network that was offering pornographic videos of children for others to download, police said. Troopers were able to trace the computer to the suspect.

A forensic analysis of the computer found multiple videos and images of children, believed to be younger than 16, engaged in sexual activity, police said.

Janne surrendered at the Glen Burnie barracks yesterday morning and was being held on $75,000 bond, said Sgt. Arthur Betts, a spokesman for the state police.

If convicted on all counts, Janne faces a maximum penalty of 48 years in prison and/or $108,000 in fines.
