For more than 90 years, until it was demolished on a snowy January day in 2004 to make way for the Enoch Pratt Free Library's Southeast Anchor branch, the glorious Grand Theatre stood on Conkling Street as the pride of Highlandtown. With its Saturday Afternoon at the Grand film series, that same library, at 3601 Eastern Ave., seeks to invoke at least the spirit of those bygone days, with a movie, refreshments and some other Grand-ian touches. 'King of Hearts' at Rock Candy
King of Hearts, a 1966 French fable set during World War I in which the patients at a local asylum take over a town threatened by an unexploded German bomb, will be shown tomorrow at Rock Candy Theater, 4321 Harford Road. Revival series at the Charles
With a reputation as one of the greatest Westerns ever made, John Ford's The Searchers is one of those rare classics where the hype doesn't overwhelm the movie; it really is that good. John Wayne stars as Ethan Edwards, a former Confederate soldier determined to rescue the niece who was kidnapped during an Indian raid. Although "rescue" may be the wrong word, since the blindingly bigoted Ethan is convinced the girl has been ruined by her association with the Comanches and believes killing her is the only way to save her (and the family's) honor. The 1956 film is this weekend's entry in the Charles Theatre's Saturday revival series. Showtime at the Charles, 1711 N. Alfred Hitchcock's 1937 Young and Innocent, with Derrick De Marney, as a writer falsely accused of killing a former girlfriend (he was seen standing over her body, after all), and Nova Pilbeam, as a police constable's daughter helping to prove his innocence, will be the subject of this month's Film Talk at the Enoch Pratt Free Library's central library, 400 Cathedral St. Showtime is 10 a.m. tomorrow, with discussion to follow.
