Police investigating fatal accident

Annapolis police were investigating a fatal accident that occurred near the U.S. Naval Academy after a federal police officer tried to pull over a speeding motorcycle, authorities said yesterday.

The crash occurred about 12:50 a.m. Saturday at Monterey and Ridgely avenues when the driver of the motorcycle went through a stop sign and hit a 1996 Oldsmobile Ciera, police said.

A Department of Defense police officer assigned to the Naval Academy first noticed the motorcycle speeding near Gate 8, police said. The officer tried to stop the motorcycle but could not, Annapolis police said.

The Department of Defense officer was not pursuing the motorcycle when it crashed a few blocks from the academy gate, authorities said. Police said the motorcycle went through a stop sign and hit the side of the Oldsmobile, driven by Larry Callis, 47, of Cypress Road in Annapolis.

Callis was treated at Anne Arundel Medical Center for injuries that included a broken arm, police said. The motorcycle's driver, David Anthony Hall, 32, of Secretariat Drive in Annapolis, was pronounced dead at the scene.
