State Trooper of the Year named

Maryland State Police Trooper 1st Class Justin M. Gross of the Bel Air barracks was recently named the State Trooper of the Year.

Gross joined the state police in 2004 after serving four years in the U.S. Air Force and one year in the Maryland Air National Guard. He served at the Glen Burnie and Golden Ring barracks before transferring to Bel Air in 2006.

In 2007, he issued more than 930 traffic citations and warnings, leading all troopers at the Bel Air barracks in traffic enforcement. His traffic stops resulted in 30 DUI arrests, 15 drug arrests, two arrests for assault on a police officer and two for wanted fugitives, and the recovery of two handguns.

Gross initiated 97 criminal investigation reports and closed 81 of them by arrest - a closure rate of 84 percent. He also led the Bel Air barracks in criminal enforcement, with 155 criminal arrests, as well as assisting other troopers in making 53 additional arrests.

Mediator honored for dedication

Bob Silcox, a mediator with the Harford County Community Mediation Program, was recently honored by Community Mediation Maryland for his commitment and dedication to the program.

A Harford County mediator since 2001, Silcox also is treasurer for the board of Community Mediation Maryland. He also helps with public awareness of community mediation.

Harford County Community Mediation Program provides free mediation to all county residents.

Silcox was given a certificate of appreciation at Community Mediation Maryland's annual gala.
