Esther V. Boone, a human services specialist with the Housing Authority of Baltimore City, died of breast cancer June 27 at her West Baltimore home. She was 55.

Esther V. Gaines was born in Baltimore and raised in East Baltimore. She was a 1972 graduate of Dunbar High School.

She earned a bachelor's degree in human services with a concentration on substance abuse and treatment from Sojourner-Douglass College in 2004.

Mrs. Boone had held several positions with the housing authority during her 13-year tenure.

In 2004, Mrs. Boone, who lived on Spruce Drive, was ordained an elder in the City of Hope International Worship Center.

"She is known throughout the city as a compassionate humanitarian. Her passion was helping inner-city families, no matter what their state or position," said a daughter, Tia L. Blue of Baltimore.

"She always wanted to help and give back. She was always volunteering at soup kitchens and shelters throughout the city, and because she did this work, she never had time to develop hobbies," Mrs. Blue said.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at the City of Hope International Worship Center, 9115 Bursa Road, Laurel.

Also surviving is another daughter, Michelle D. Boone of Baltimore; and a sister, Maxine L. Gaines of Baltimore. A marriage to Michael Boone ended in divorce.
