2 badly hurt in crash that ties up U.S. 50

A single-car crash just west of the Bay Bridge seriously injured two people late Saturday and shut down U.S. 50 near Cape St. Claire for hours, creating traffic jams as vehicles were rerouted onto side streets.

State police, who are investigating the accident, said a 2003 Jeep driven by Gary J. Williams, 27, of Joppa crashed and overturned shortly after 9:30 p.m. Two of the vehicle's three passengers were thrown from the vehicle and remained hospitalized yesterday in critical condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The driver and other passenger were released after treatment.

Police said the Jeep was towing a boat, which stayed in the eastbound lanes while the Jeep crossed over into the westbound lanes.

All lanes of U.S. 50 were closed at 9:52 p.m. The westbound lanes reopened two hours later, but the eastbound lane remained closed to traffic until 1:40 a.m., police said.

One killed, one injured in wreck

One person died and another was seriously injured in a collision in Howard County over the weekend, according to police.

About 10:30 p.m. Saturday, a Toyota Camry traveling north on U.S. 1 in Jessup attempted to make a left turn into the parking lot of the Cedar Motel, Howard County Police said yesterday. The Camry was struck on the passenger's side by a southbound Chevrolet Tahoe.

The right-front passenger in the Camry, a woman whose name police did not release, was taken to Howard County General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The driver of the Camry, Mario Perez, 39, of the 8800 block of Tamar Drive in Columbia, was in serious condition at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Police said alcohol use was a factor in the crash.

No one in the Tahoe was injured, police said.
