Library has classes for ages 3-5

Classes for preschoolers at the Central Library are designed to teach creative expression and social skills, increase comprehension and lay the foundation for reading through letter and number recognition, and build vocabulary.

"What's in My Art Box?" a class for ages 3-5 with an adult, will be offered at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. July 9. The focus will be on the concept of form.

Color will be the focus at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. July 23.

Registration begins Wednesday.

"Storybook Friends" for ages 2-5 with an adult, offers a story and a craft to enjoy with your child. The class will be held at 1 p.m. July 15, and the story will be Eric Carle's The Very Quiet Cricket.

Play groups sessions begin week of July 8

The Town Center Community Association is accepting registration for the summer session of Parents & Tots Play Groups. The session begins the week of July 8.

Children ages 6 months to 4 years meet on Tuesdays; ages 6 to 24 months meet Wednesdays; and children 6 months to 4 years meet Thursdays. All the groups meet from 10 a.m. to noon and run for eight weeks.

Each group is limited to 15 children.

The groups meet weekly at Historic Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point Road. The cost is $20 for Columbia residents; $22 for nonresidents. Siblings can enroll for half price.

Atholton High awarded funds

As part of the 2007-2008 Giant Food A+ BonusBucks program, Atholton High School has been awarded $10,769.

The program, which provides opportunities for Giant customers to help designated local schools by making purchases with a BonusCard, earned $2 million for some 3,000 area schools this year.

Military

Graduates : Navy Ensign Marcus D. Robinson, a 2004 graduate of Wilde Lake High School, recently graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis and was commissioned as an officer. He is the son of Carleton and Stanette Robinson of Columbia.

Around Town

Theater camp : Slayton House Camp of the Arts is accepting registration for its musical theater camp for children who have completed full-day kindergarten and those in first through seventh grades.
