GETTING THERE

Lewes, Del., is about five miles north of Rehoboth Beach, Del., and about 15 miles north of Ocean City. It's about 110 miles away from Baltimore. The drive is 2 1/2 to three hours, if Chesapeake Bay Bridge traffic is moving well.

GETTING AROUND

Drive, walk or take the bus. Parking meters are in effect in the summer, and parking permits are needed in some residential areas. There are bike rentals (rehoboth.com). As for buses, the Jolly Trolley (jollytrolley.com) runs in and around Rehoboth and Dewey beaches; the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Trolley (capemaylewesferry.com) stops in and around Lewes and Rehoboth; and the DART First State (dartfirststate.com) public bus service runs from Dover, Del., and Wilmington, Del., to the beaches.

DOG-FRIENDLY BEACHES

Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes and Delaware Seashore State Park south of Dewey Beach: Dogs are allowed unless the beach is marked for swimming (destateparks.com).

Dewey Beach: Dogs are allowed on the beach before 9:30 a.m. and after 5:30 p.m. during the summer if they are leashed and have a city license (deweybeach.com).

Lewes Beach: Dogs are allowed on the beach before 8 a.m. and after 6:30 p.m. from May 1 to Sept. 30 (lewes.com). The rules are less restrictive off season.

Broadkill Beach: Dogs allowed.

Rehoboth Beach: Dogs are not allowed on the beach and boardwalk from April 1 through Oct. 31 (rehoboth.com). The rules are less restrictive off-season.
