5 Things I Have To Have Now

Aileen Gabbey

June 22, 2008|By Joanna Brenner

Animal lover Aileen Gabbey has been with the Maryland SPCA since 1997. She began as the director of volunteers and events and moved to her current position of executive director in 1999.

Although she loves to play with her two dogs at home, June is all about cats at the Falls Road facility. Throughout the rest of the month, one cat per household can be adopted for half-off the regular adoption fee. Gabbey said the Feline Fiesta "really seems to be moving cats. We are trying to turn a very sad situation into a positive one."

Gabbey lives in Baltimore with her husband, Neil, who teaches at Gilman School, and their dogs Cory and Alvie.

1

A mini-trampoline

"This sounds like such a fun way to exercise to me! Walking on a treadmill can be a bit dull."

2

A carpet runner for our dog Alvie

"Our dog/kid is getting older and has been struggling to get down the finished wooden stairs without slipping. Carpeting would give him some traction."

3

A safe new animal transport van

"The Maryland SPCA takes in animals from local shelters in order to find them homes. With this warm weather, I worry about our old 1990 Aerostar van breaking down with animals in it."

4

Another Pete Yorn concert

"I missed this musician's show when he was last in Baltimore at Sonar, but have seen him in my hometown of Rochester, N.Y. My husband and I like going to smaller concert venues as we get older."

5

A little more technology in my life

"Technology has revolutionized animal welfare, but I've been slow with it in my personal life. Neil and I have no computer at home, just one cell phone, and no iPod. It literally shocks people."
