Children's programs scheduled at the east Columbia library

Classes for preschool-age children at the east Columbia library are designed to teach creative expression, social skills, listening comprehension and the foundations of reading through letter and number recognition, and to build vocabulary.

"Story Bug Parade," for ages 2 and 3 with an adult will be offered at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Mondays, July 7-28. Tickets are available at the Children's Desk 30 minutes before the class.

Classes for kindergartners through fifth-graders are intended to develop cognitive and social skills. "Brown Bag and Books for Boys," a chance for boys ages 9 to 11 to read and talk about books, will be offered at 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays, July 1-22. Registration begins Tuesday.

"Eric Carle's Bugs" teaches lessons about insects using the Carle's classic children's books. The class, for ages 4 to 6, is offered at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Wednesdays. Registration, which begins July 2, must be done for each class.

"Why Mosquitos Buzz: Bugs in Folklore and Legend," for ages 6 to 9, includes classic stories about insects and a craft activity. The class will be held at 1:30 p.m. July 10. Registration begins July 3.

Oakland Mills celebrating its 40th birthday this month

The 40th birthday celebration of Oakland Mills, the second village to be established in Columbia, will be held Friday through June 29 at The Other Barn in Oakland Mills Village Center.

Facts and trivia about Oakland Mills, or memorabilia that can be displayed during the birthday celebration, are welcome. Former residents, employees and volunteers are invited.

A free family movie from 1968 will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday. An Oakland Mills Fest, with music, food and activities, is planned from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in the courtyard, and a Disco Dance in the Loft will be held at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5.

There will be a gathering of those involved in the life of the village between 1968 and 1978 at the Disco Dance in the Loft. Those who want to participate should call 410-381-6185.

The Oakland Mills farmers' market will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 29, and street musicians will provide background music. A free concert featuring jazz vocalist Lavenia Nesmith will be held at 5 p.m. Information: 410-730-4610.

Vacation Bible school : Christ United Methodist Church will hold a vacation Bible school from 6 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. today through Thursday at Owen Brown Interfaith Center, 7246 Cradlerock Way. The Theme is "Power Lab: Discovering Jesus' Miraculous Power." The cost is $6 a child each night; $30 a child for the week, and includes a light supper. Registration is requested, but not required. Wrestling camp : East Coast Champ Wrestling Camp is accepting registration for its summer camp, to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow through Friday at Oakland Mills High School.
