Bruce Lamont Savage, 37, of the 1800 block of Copeland St. was heading east on Farrugut Road in the Hillsmere community about 4:10 a.m. when he veered off the left side of the road, police said. He struck a no-parking sign and mailbox, crossed over Bay Drive and an embankment, hit a piling head-on and plunged into the water.

The 1995 green Ford Explorer came to rest on its roof. Savage was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Police said speed may have been a factor in the crash.

Bloomberg name to adorn new tower

A 12-story tower being built to house the Johns Hopkins Children's Center will be named the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children's Center at Johns Hopkins, in honor of the 99-year-old mother of New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, a Johns Hopkins graduate and former trustee.

Hopkins officials announced the naming yesterday, along with news of another gift from Bloomberg in support of the Children's Center project and others. The amount of the latest gift was not disclosed, but Bloomberg is believed to have given more than $200 million to his alma mater in recent years.

The Hopkins Children's Center, Maryland's largest children's hospital, will move to the new building in 2011. The tower is under construction at the northwest corner of Wolfe and Orleans streets in East Baltimore.

Charlotte Bloomberg was born in Jersey City, N.J., and her son often credits her for his strong work ethic and belief in the importance of philanthropy.

Michael Bloomberg also honored his mother on her 75th birthday in 1983 by establishing the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Professorship in the Humanities in Hopkins' Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

Smith named dean of business school

The University of Baltimore announced yesterday the promotion of Darlene B. Smith to dean of the Merrick School of Business.

Currently an associate dean at the downtown business school, Smith replaces Susan Zacur, who will become interim provost. The current provost, Wim Wiewel, is leaving the midtown campus to become president of Portland State University in Oregon.

Smith, 51, has a doctorate from the University of Maryland, College Park and a master's in business administration from the University of Baltimore. Before coming to UB in 2005, she taught at George Washington University and Loyola College, where she was the academic director of graduate business programs.

Smith's salary will be $206,000, officials said.

Witnesses sought in cabdriver shooting

Taxi drivers at BWI Marshall Airport, looking for options to protect themselves after one of them was shot in the stomach during an attempted robbery last week, gathered yesterday to plead for witnesses to come forward. The drivers said they don't feel safe after the shooting Wednesday night of Aston Beadle, 63, who was ambushed in the Woodlawn area after work.

A police spokesman said that it appears the gunman was waiting for the victim.
