OTHER NOTABLE DEATHS

June 10, 2008

LOUISE ALLEN, 91

First lady of Atlanta

Louise Allen, the widow of former Atlanta Mayor Ivan Allen Jr., died Saturday at her Atlanta home.

She was Atlanta's first lady from 1962 to 1970. Her son, Inman Allen, said she advised her husband and was at his side during historic moments but preferred being in the background.

Mrs. Allen was a founder of the Atlanta Speech School and the Forward Arts Foundation. She was known for her ability to persuade people to volunteer for civic projects.

JAKE FLAKE, 72

Arizona lawmaker

Jake Flake, a longtime Republican state lawmaker and a reminder of the days when cowboys dominated the Arizona Legislature, died Sunday.

The cause of death was not known, but Mr. Flake had been recovering from injuries he suffered in a fall May 24 at his ranch, said his son Travis Flake.

Mr. Flake, who served in the state House from 1997 to 2004, championed the interests of fellow ranchers and other rural residents on such matters as state trust land, economic development and highway funding.
