Kids Fishing Day to be held

The National Wildlife visitor Center at the Patuxent Research Refuge will sponsor a Kids Fishing Day for children ages 15 and younger from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Learn how to cast a rod, identify and handle fish, and other skills. Fishing equipment will be provided, but personal fishing gear can be used for fishing at the Refuge's North Tract after the event.

Although the center is closed for repairs, outdoor programs are continuing and the grounds remain open until 4:30 p.m. daily, except on federal holidays.

Fest : The Savage Fest will continue from noon to 5 p.m. today at Carroll Baldwin Hall. The annual community festival includes live music, pony rides, a rock-climbing wall, a jumbo jet for small children, face-painting, balloon yo-yos, a fast pitch machine and an inflatable playground. Also featured are sand candy and Scouts selling hot dogs, snow cones, barbecue from Ma's Kettle restaurant, funnel cakes and curly fries. Free screenings : Howard County General Hospital will offer free blood pressure screenings at the Savage branch library on the second Monday of each month. The walk-in screenings will be from noon to 3 p.m. at the library, 9525 Durness Lane. 410-740-7601 or www.hcgh.org.

Summer classes : The South Laurel Recreation Council is accepting registration for summer classes for children, teens and adults. Classes begin this weekend and thereafter at the Montpelier Carriage House, south Laurel elementary schools and the Montpelier Neighborhood Park. Yoga is offered from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays; chair aerobics from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.; tai chi from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays; Pilates, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. Yoga is again offered from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays. Dance classes include salsa (7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays); Latin dance (8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays); line dance (8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays); beginning ballroom dance (7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays); and intermediate ballroom dance (8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays). Beginning knitting for children and adults, chess for children and adults, and stamping techniques are also offered. Tennis classes for children ages 6-12, teens and adults begin Tuesday and thereafter at the Montpelier Neighborhood Park on Route 197. Helping : North Laurel-Savage Multiservice Center, a cooperative center created by nonprofits, has expanded to include counseling, legal assistance, information and referral, immigrant services, and assistance with food, energy and housing. Sellers sought : Reservoir High School, 1550 Scaggsville Road, Fulton, is planning a yard sale, and is seeking vendors and sellers. The yard sale will be from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 21.
