Kevin's Rant

Taylor rumor just ridiculous

May 31, 2008|By KEVIN VAN VALKENBURG

The rumor that Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor might end up here through a trade might have been one of the most ridiculous Ravens trade rumors in recent memory and is a good example of why NFL football is nothing like fantasy football.

Taylor can still play. And he would fit in just fine with the Ravens. But he also makes $7.5 million a year and is 33 years old. Giving away a high draft pick for a veteran on the downside of his career is something the Redskins might do, but not the Ravens. The Ravens are trying to rebuild by getting younger and remaining flexible under the salary cap. And until the situation gets sorted out at quarterback, there is no reason to go after high-priced veterans. Taylor could have 19 sacks and the Ravens still wouldn't go to the Super Bowl without better quarterback play.

Finding out if fellow Dancing with the Stars alum Kristi Yamaguchi wanted to try out and be the Ravens' slot receiver would have made more sense than giving away draft picks for Taylor. There is no way Yamaguchi has worse hands than Patrick Johnson and Travis Taylor did.
