Weather maps on this page really bug Darrell Bishop of Baltimore. "With the United States map, the colder weather is shown in green and blue, and the hotter weather is shown in tan and reds," he writes. On the Maryland map, the cooler western counties are tan, while the warmer east is green. "Shouldn't the Maryland colors be reversed?" You'd be right if they represented temperature. But it's e levation, and mapmakers commonly use green for lowlands, and browner colors for uplands. So do we.
