A Howard County grand jury indicted Calvin R. Payne yesterday on attempted murder charges after his 81-year-old wife was hit on the head with a hammer this month. Payne, 83, of the 6200 block of Satinwood Drive in Columbia is being held without bond at the Howard County Detention Center.

According to police and family members, Payne attacked his wife, Alma Payne, repeatedly with a hammer in their home until she pretended to be dead. Four of her fingers were broken, and her head injuries required 50 staples, prosecutors said. Alma Payne was released from Maryland Shock Trauma Center on May 22.
