Library to host reading event June 7

The east Columbia branch library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will host a Summer Reading kick-off celebration from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 7.

Attendees can join a summer reading club, if they have not already done so; registration begins June 2. Parents can sign up to read books, magazines or newspapers to their children and earn prizes. Information:

The kick-off celebration includes an Edible Insects Cooking Show at 9:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.; children's author and musician Barry Louis Polisar will speak from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. A teen book panel is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to noon, and an adult book panel from noon to 1 p.m. Flumpa (the singing and dancing tree frog) and friends will be on hand from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Children's stories will be read every 30 minutes, beginning at 9:15 a.m. What's hot this summer for adult readers will be discussed from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Face painting is from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Lunch will be sold by Boy Scouts Troop 432 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The day begins with the library's first Fun Run/Walk in the neighborhood at 8 a.m. June 7.

The cost to register for the walk is $20 in advance; $25 at the door. Or $50 a family in advance; $60 at the gate. Registration in advance must be postmarked by Friday.

Birthday : The 40th Birthday Celebration of Oakland Mills, the second village established in Columbia, will be June 27-29 at The Other Barn in the Oakland Mills Village Center. Interesting facts and trivia about Oakland Mills, or memorabilia that can be displayed during the birthday celebration are needed. Former residents, employees and volunteers are invited. A free family movie from 1968 will be shown at 7 p.m. June 27. An Oakland Mills Fest, with music food and activities, is planned from noon to 3 p.m. June 28 in the courtyard, and a Disco Dance in the Loft will be held at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5. There will be a mini gathering of those involved in the life of the village between 1968 and 1978 at the Disco Dance in the Loft. Those who want to participate should call 410-381-6185. The Oakland Mills farmers' market will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 29, and street musicians will provide background music. Classes, therapies : The East Columbia 50+ Center is offering appointments for reflexology - deep foot massage - 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays. The cost is $40 for a 50-minute treatment. Appointments are also available between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Fridays. Reiki treatments are available 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the first and third Fridays of each month. The cost is $30 for a 55-minute treatment.

*Tai Chi for Arthritis is offered 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The emphasis is on breathing and inner stillness to relieve stress and anxiety. The cost is $32 a month; no drop-ins.

*"Harmonize Exercise Class" meets 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. O.H. Laster, a personal fitness trainer, teaches "Stamina, Strength, Stretch and Synergy." The cost is $24 a month; no drop-ins.

*Pilates class, to improve strength, flexibility and coordination while reducing stress, meets noon to 1 p.m. Thursdays. The cost is $36 for six weeks. 410-313-7680.
