Book club introduces biography category

June book clubs at the Glenwood branch library include a new club focused on biography that will meet at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. The group will discuss The Death of Sigmund Freud: The Legacy of His Last Days, by Mark Edmundson, at 7 p.m. June 4.

The library's Contemporary Fiction book club will meet at 7 p.m. June 2 to discuss The Whole World Over by Julia Glass. The group meets on the first Monday of each month.

Around town

Teen space : The Glenwood Community Center's game room for teens is open 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The room, designed by teens, is for ages 12 and older. It includes a pool table, table tennis, bumper pool and a video game area with a big-screen television. After-school activities and programs are planned. An identification card from the center is required. The program is provided with assistance from the Horizon Foundation. The center is at 2400 Route 97 in Cooksville. 410-313-4840.

Preschool programs : The Glenwood branch library, 2350 Route 97, Cooksville, will offer preschool classes for young children to teach social skills, comprehension and the foundations of reading. An adult must accompany kids younger than 3. "Picture Book Parade," a 30-minute program of music and stories for ages 2 to 5, is to be offered at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays. Registration is not required. Carnival : The 62nd annual Mount Airy Lions Club Carnival will be held June 2-7 at the Firemen's Carnival Grounds at Route 27 and Twin Arch Road in Mount Airy. Food booths open at 5:30 p.m.; rides start at 6:30 p.m. daily. Parking is free. Visitors can ride all night for one price Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
