Senior Devon Jerrard pitched a seven-hitter and drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead No. 14 Boys' Latin to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference championship, 3-2, over Park yesterday at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen.

It was the Lakers' third B Conference title - the others were in 1983 and 1993 - and the first under second-year coach Mike Bordick, the former Orioles shortstop.

"Any kid at any level puts some sort of commitment into what they do," Bordick said. "These kids made the commitment and sacrifice to make themselves better and play the game the right way. Their preparation is what it is all about."

It was the third victory by the Lakers (21-5) over Park this season. They defeated the Bruins (13-8) twice in the regular season by scores of 10-0 and 6-5.

Jerrard (7-1) made sure it was a sweep, going the distance on 85 pitches, striking out three and walking three to beat the Bruins' Tony DeMarco, who allowed eight hits.

After Lakers shortstop Austin Knight singled to start the bottom of the fifth and was thrown out stealing by Rex Gelb, Paul Mellinger doubled to right, his second hit of the game. Mellinger then stole third and dashed home on Jerrard's fly ball to center to give Boys' Latin a 3-1 lead. Alec Ring singled to score Gelb in the top of the sixth to make it 3-2.
